I saw this quote yesterday and it hit me like a ton of bricks, especially after a conversation I had with my dad this week. On Wednesday, I was lucky enough to spend the entire day with my dad. Recently, when I’m with him, I’ve started asking him more and more questions about my mom. I’m trying to understand her situation a bit better, so I can have more compassion for her. This time, he just looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “All I can see in you is the good that came from the situation, your empathy….” We both got choked up. Then when I saw this quote, it hit me- I tend to focus on the negative effects that came from having a difficult relationship with my mom. #mommyissues -ha!
In some ways, this has been very healthy and healing for me. I needed to acknowledge those hard times and no longer deny the feelings from that time. I needed to lean into it all and let God heal that area of my life. But, what I didn’t realize is that I don’t focus on the positives things that have come from my “wounds.” What if I start focusing on the wisdom that God has given me from working through those wounds? No longer letting my wounds make me feel wounded, but instead focusing on the wisdom I’ve gleaned from the hard times. I like this thought.
