Grunge vs. LA Street Style

IMG_0110

Back in Junior High, we called this the “grunge” look. Now-a-days, I call it the hip LA street style look -ha!  But let’s be honest, if I had my doc martins on (oh yes, I totally had a pair), I would totally be “grunge”. So, here are some tricks I use to keep my hip LA street style look from becoming the grunge look.

If an outfit has a masculine feel to it (grunge in my mind), I like to balance it some with girly styling. I might do this by wearing my hair down, adding a red lip, and wearing some fun jewelry.

I also like to make sure that the fundamentals of my outfit are well fitting- the jeans are tight, and the tee fits well. It could really look grunge-y if my clothes were too big. I feel like it’s important to show your feminine silhouette (wink, wink).

I’ve been asked what the best way to tie a shirt around your waist is, and here are a few tips I came up with:

1.Keep the shirt natural, and don’t make it look too perfect. In the end, don’t give it much thought. If it ties more to the left than the right, just go with it.

2. Depending on the fabric of the shirt, you may want to button the top two buttons for a slimmer shirt tail. If the shirt is bulky, it could add bulk where you don’t want it.

3. If the collar is thick, it’s best to have the shirt folded so that the collar is showing. For instance, when I tie my denim jacket around my waist, I’ll fold it over so that the collar shows. Otherwise it’s just a big bump around my bum (wait… maybe I SHOULD do this -ha!).

4. Leave it alone, and don’t fidget with it. I like to just let it be.

I hope you guys enjoy the ways I make myself feel less grunge and more LA street style!

You are so witty and adorable. You young girls keeps us older “girls” looking hip and stylin’.
You are so right about the silhouette. I made the mistake of pairing a wide bell bottom yoga pant witha loose top. Yikes! My 30 something year old daughter explained the porportion rule and a tight fitting top remedied the problem.
Keep posting…you always make my day (and my fashion sense).
