My Story

It is said that there is a time in everyone’s lives when the rose-colored glasses of childhood get ripped off your face and you’re left grappling with reality. It happened to me when I became a mother. Although, I’m not sure my glasses were rose-colored from a great childhood (I lived through the painful experience (trauma) of having an alcoholic mom). Instead, I think my glasses were a rose-tint I made up for myself as a way of surviving a confusing childhood.

My rose-tint was perfectionism. I decided that if I was perfect and everything looked perfect, I could escape judgement from other people.

Well, as we know, you can’t control kids, and life is far from perfect. So, I had to start facing the reality that I could not make things or people perfect. Expecting my kids to behave a certain way because my self-esteem depended on it was NOT fair to my kids. That’s when I realized I had to deal with my issues, my story, my past.

This was NOT easy. I was so ashamed of so many things. I was ashamed of the unstable home I came from, and of how I felt as a mother- so ill equipped, so imperfect. I was ashamed of my own sadness/depression caused by triggers from my past. How was I supposed to even start to dig myself out of such a dark hole?

I had to breakdown to breakthrough. To own my story and start dealing with my stuff was, and is, the most courageous and difficult thing I will ever do. It was not easy to deal with “my stuff”. It was painful and depressing, but I knew I ran the risk of becoming an unhealthy mother raising insecure kids. But more than that, I knew God promises joy and peace for his children (me). I also knew shame was not of God.

I now know that my story is not uncommon (although, for a long time, a voice in my head said I was the only one with these kind of issues, and I was weird. That was and is a lie!), so I’m planning to share more of my story. A lot of that is because of your encouragement, but it’s also because I know how healing it is to read another person’s words that let me know I’m not weird, or the only one who thinks these things. I do it because I know that clothes are fun and great and can help get me out of a hole, but (speaking from personal experience) someone else’s words can be life giving. And that’s what it’s all about, right?!

So in this spirit, I’ve decided there is a place for both on C. Style (clothes and my story) because life is all about living from the inside out and expressing your true self!

P.S.

This is my form of a book club -ha! What I’ve learned from starting to own my story can all be traced back to books that I’ve read.  If you’ve read The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown, you know so much of the insights from this post are from that book. If anything I said in this post resonated with you, definetly grab that book and start reading. I’ll share more of what I’ve learned from different books as a form of a book club and a way to share my story. That way, if what I say resonates, you can read more about it for yourself. You can see all my favorite books here.

You should give a look at Al-Anon –I think real recovery can begin for you there. It’s a great design for living.

Hi Erica, I love Al-Anon! I also went to Al-Ateen which was so helpful when I was a teenager! Yes, recovery did begin there.

Another inspiring, easy read is Rachel Hollis’, “Girl, Wash Your Face.” It’s made me truly rethink many of the “lies” we tell ourselves. Love the blog and what you’re doing with it.

Carly, I admire your courage and honesty. No one is perfect, and no one gets through life without heartache, but sharing your story will comfort and fortify those who need to hear your words. God smiles as we help others.

Do you want new hair growth in your eyebrows? I ha Do you want new hair growth in your eyebrows? I have a trick, and no, it’s not an expensive hair growth serum! It’s Castor Oil, so it’s all natural and inexpensive. Apparently, it’s been used for thousands of years dating back to ancient Egypt. Ok, and I use it on my eyelashes, too, but I’m doing that at my own risk. I don’t want to recommend this practice, since I don’t really know what it’s going to do to my eyesight. I know, call me crazy- it’s fine.

Thanks to my friend, Michelle for telling me about this little trick!

Comment “oil” for links to both the Castor Oil and the wands I use. #beautytips #beauty #eyebrows #beautyproducts
I attended a funeral today of a friend who died of I attended a funeral today of a friend who died of mental illness. If my friend is strong enough to stand at the podium and talk about her husband and the hope her family has in the midst of their darkest days, then I want to honor both of them by telling you about my struggle with mental illness. My friend mentioned that many of her husband’s closest friends had no idea that he’d been struggling with mental illness for 3 years, and I realized that many of you, and probably some of my closest friends don’t know how long and hard my struggle has been with mental illness. For me my mental illness wasn’t the kind where I couldn’t get out of bed or out of the house, which would make it hard to tell I was struggling. For me it looked more like battling through the day and struggling with my own self condemning thoughts and emotions - shaming myself for being happy one minute and sad the next, or for not being happy all the time, looking around at all my blessings and not feeling gratitude, which made me feel like there was something wrong with me. It was hard to get excited. On some days I walked around feeling like a scared puppy in a big bad world with my emotions right at the surface. For me, my faith is very important to me, and I knew this was not the life God had for me, so I started to pray for help and deliverance. God started to lead me to help in a whole bunch of different forms, counselors, health practitioners, friends, medicine, trauma therapy, EMDR, books, excercise, the support of family, and most importantly, Christ and His word.
For me, it was over a 10 year battle probably because I was overcoming a lot of trauma being raised by an alcoholic mom. But for you it may be longer or shorter or this isn’t something you struggle with at all (hallelujah!). If you do, your emotions and your struggle may be different. But I’m here to say, you’re loved. You are loved by God and by so many of the people around you. Don’t give up. Dig in and fight the battle that’s happening in your mind. Fight it like you would if you had cancer. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalillness #mentalhealthmatters

How to get the cuffed denim look without buying a How to get the cuffed denim look without buying a new pair of jeans! You don’t need to buy a new pair of jeans to get the cuffed denim look! Just grab a pair of straight leg jeans from your closet, cuff them to be about an inch or 2 above the top of your ankle bone and use the nifty little gadget from this tutorial. Viola! Plus, the cuffed denim length makes it a heck of a lot easier to wear most of the shoes in your closet! #winning
