I’m a big fan of flare leg pants and jeans, but flares are a bit more complicated than the skinny jeans we’ve all grown accustomed to and love (well, a lot of us, anyway). Here’s why– I find that most of the time they need some kind of hemming (or cutting! -thank goodness raw edges are an option!). I’ve found that I usually can not wear the same flares I wear with flats as I do with heels. If I wear the flares I usually wear with flats with heels, they usually look like high waters and don’t have the barely skimming the floor look I’m going for (a la Rachel Zoe). There are some exceptions, but it’s rare.
So here’s the question– do I hem my flares to wear with flats or heels?! A client asked me just this question the other day, so I thought I’d share what I normally do for myself.

I typically choose whether I’m going to wear that specific flare with flats or heels and then hem/cut accordingly. And when deciding which flares to wear with flats and which flares to hem wear with heels, I typically hem the darker wash for heels because I feel a darker wash is a bit dressier, kinda like a trouser look (like the picture above).

And I hem lighter, more casual washes for flats.
I hope I’m making sense. Clear as mud, right? Anyway, I hope you find this information helpful! If you did, drop a comment below!
